A fine late 19th century navigators Octant, brass frame with tulip frame design. Engraved on the arc W. Gerrard, Liverpool.
The silver scale reads from -5 degrees to 130 degrees and is divided into 10 minute increments. The index arm has swinging scale magnifier, the silver vernier scale reads from 0 to 10 seconds of arc.
Octant radius 7.5 inch radius.
This antique Octant is contained within its original hardwood box. It comes complete with all its accessories - two telescopes, one eye piece sun filter and mirror adjusting tool.
The finely engraved silver escutcheon plate mounted on the top of the box reads - THE SAMUELSON PRIZE presented to JOHN OLIVER ARNOLD for proficiency in PHYSICAL SCIENCE June 1876.
